DAS NOT GUD. Dammit.
Compression test is 120psi on each side. Doesn’t sound like bottom end. Cam followers maybe? Going to check under the other rockers tomorrow and maybe pop the heads off.
Ugh :(

By the sound and speed, valvetrain is it. Pull the plugs and roll the engine over by hand. Feel/move the rockers through the rotation and I bet you find one that is loose then the rocker is fully up and the valve is fully closed. I’d guess rocker adjustment clearance to valve at full closed should be 8 to 10 thousands. Sounds more like 40 thou.
As you probably know, the lifter screw and lock nut is on top of the valve. Perhaps a locking nut has loosened. Find the loose rocker and adjust the loose valve so it’s the same clearance as the others and problem solved.
Ps - Though I’ve never ridden one, that’s one of my favorite bikes.

Yeah I checked the left side and it sounds fine. It got kinda deep at one point which had me concerned. I’m really hoping I’ll find a smoking gun on the right side but I dunno how much life this engine has left in it even if this is something simple.. the oil in here smells like ass and is super nasty even though it is full to the right level.
They’re great bikes. I can stick it in top gear (5th) at 20mph and pin the throttle and it will pull perfectly evenly up to 110mph with no complaints. The flattest torque curve in the universe. Not super smooth on the highway, though. A little buzzy through the handlebars IIRC.

PS - don’t pop the heads until you need to. Never know what you can screw up for no good reason.
The only other thing I could imagine is a bent valve that won’t fully come up. However that is hard to believe considering good compression on both cylinders so I kind of rule that out.
I suppose another possibility is the valve seat has dropped a bit. That would explain the good compression but I don’t know if it is possible. It would make sense if the noise happened all the sudden and the adjuster is tight. But I wouldn’t jump to conclusions just cause I suggested it.

I wondered why you let the oil get so bad, but then I read the previous post.
Here’s something to consider. https://www.motomucci.com/blog//2012/03/aftercx500-common-issues.html

Yeah, I have no idea how suddenly this happened since the bike wasn’t in my possession. Gonna borescope it tomorrow and check under the other valve cover. I’m really hoping it’s something stupid like a broken valve adjuster. Damn thing runs like a top and fired RIGHT up even after sitting in some lady’s field for an indeterminate amount of time.

I figure it’s a an adjuster that has loosened up. Or else a seat that has dropped ( I am not sure that is possible).
I kind of figure the game plan for this bike is find a replacement and turn this into a cafe racer and sell it. It’s been rode hard and put up wet. Better to invest is a craiglist find and send this one on the way as a functioning bargain.

lol bottom end is spun as shit. Oil was sparkly. Buddy has a complete engine for $75 that has a crack in the block. Take out internals of bad engine, put in internals of running-but-leaking-coolant engine, call it a day.
